DUBAI GETS COOL

Five Green is a concept store located in Dubai that incorporates urban lifestyle brands with contemporary arts exhibitions. The store stocks brands from Europe, the US and Canada (including XLarge, BoxFresh, Upper Playground).

The aspect I find most interesting about Five Green is that it is trying to showcase the new crop of creatives coming out of Dubai such as Chadiyo, Mona Ibrahim and Saadia Zahid. Dubai found notoriety for its large shopping malls and jewellery stores, I think it's great to see something new in this city that is growing at an astounding rate.

Exhibitions to be held at the store will include Charles & Ray Eames retrospective, supported by Vitra and Lomographic exhibitions and events.

NIKE DUNK HIGH PREMIUM 2008 GOLD

It's not often I see a sneaker and think right away that I need to add it to my collection, but when I saw this bad boy I knew it needed to join the space underneath my bed!

M.I.A. PAPER PLANES REMIXES

I have been a big fan of M.I.A. for a long time now, one of my favourite tracks of 2007 was M.I.A. - Boyz [Rock Steady Drew Fight Remix].

M.I.A. tends to attract remixers like my belly button attracts fluff. Below is a stellar collection of remixes of her track Paper Planes.

ELECTROLUX CLEANS UP WITH PIA WALLEN

I am sorry, it’s a terrible pun, I couldn’t help myself! This has to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing vacuum cleaners I have seen since Dyson launched its first vacuum cleaner in 1991. This vacuum cleaner was designed by Pia Wallen a Swedish felt designer.

Yes, this vacuum cleaner is VERY nice with its stark white body accented with a striking orange... here comes the inevitable, “but”. A vacuum cleaner is for picking up dirt and small change you have left lying around. How long will a white vacuum cleaner stay white for? Will you spend more time cleaning it than you will your floors?

TEAR DUCTS 1 - ONIONS 0

When it all gets too much and you need to retreat behind a pair of sunglasses or the sun comes out (well, the chance would be a fine thing in London) get your eyeballs behind a pair of these Maison Martin Margiela sunglasses.

As you may have seen from Margiela’s runway pictures he likes to black out the eyes of his models. Margiela has put down his Sharpie and given his models a pair of his ultra slick sunglasses. So, whether you’re looking out onto Lake Como, on board your 100ft yacht wearing Pucci swimwear or chopping an onion in your flat in Dalston, make sure your eyes are protected by a pair of these Margiela sunglasses.

SOMETHING FOR NOTHING?

There’s no such thing as a free dinner, but there is free music; legal or illegal.

The Independent has teamed up with Sony Ericsson to offer ten free tracks to download. Before you rush to the shops to buy said phone, only stopping at the newsagent to grab the
paper and thus falling for this marketing ploy, stop!

The tracks are lifted from a forth-coming compilation album “You Don’t know”. The tracks are courtesy of “Ninja Tune” a leading independent record label. It’s a varied track choice from Wiley to Pop Levi.

Track list
1. TO BUILD A HOME – The Cinematic Orchestra
2. NIGHTLITE – Bonobo
3. BLUE HONEY – Pop Levi
4. THE ART OF KISSING – The Lost Song
5. WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES (TIGA MIX) – Coldcut
6. BONGOS, BLEEPS & BASSLINES (DIBABA REMIX) – Zero db
7. DROP AUDIO FEAT ID – The Qemists
8. THAT KIND OF MAN – The Heavy
9. 50/50 – Wiley
10. SWEDENBORGSKE ROM – Jaga Jazziest

VALENTINES SURPRISE

Marmite have launched a limited edition flavour for Valentines day, they’ve added champagne to the brown stuff. You either love it or you hate it. Well, I used to hate it, now I love it and hate it. I still hate the taste, texture and smell but I have always been fond of the packaging and witty advertising. Where the traditional packaging held the branding, the limited edition packaging contains those three words, “I LOVE YOU”.

I haven’t tasted, and I will not. However, the packaging is a winner and that’s more than enough for me.

THE PRICE OF HAPPINESS IN SPRING/SUMMER 08 IS...

£179. That is the cost of this Raf Simons x Eastpak duffle backpack, my personal favourite of all the bags Raf has designed for Eastpak this season. The backpack pays homage to the traditional army duffle bag. Raf has reworked the bag with performance fabrics and added some nice contrasting straps. I was getting tired of designer collaborations, they usually consist of a big brand commissioning a small brand to put a print on something. The Raf Simons x Eastpak collaboration is one that has ticked all my boxes!

I’ll be picking mine up this week and waving good-bye to my gold Vans x Marc Jacobs backpack.

THE NEW ANN DEMEULEMEESTER STORE

Ann Demeulemeester has just unveiled a new store in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. The store has been designed by Korean design gurus Mass Studies. Demeulemeester is one of my favourite fashion designers, her collections are known for their use of monochromatic colour and strong tailoring. Demeulemeester is often referred to as one of the "Antwerp 6" who include Walter Van Beirendonck, Dries van Noten, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs, Marina Yee and Demeulemeester. The Antwerp six collectively graduated from Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the 1980s. All have gone on to forge their own successful careers in design with their unique style.

For me, this store epitomises everything we are seeing in design at present and how we can expect it to remain for the forseeable future. The store offers a minimal constructed look contrasted by the raw organic texture of the grass used to skin the building.

THE MONSTER MASH

Instalment two has arrived...

I am getting over Wonder Wall, the architects who brought us the A Bathing Ape stores and the new Uni Qlo fla
gship store in London. They have been getting hype from sneaker heads to Wallpaper* magazine. Don't get me wrong Wonder Wall are AMAZING architects, I just want to see someone else getting the accolades because there is so much other great work being done!

When I came across Mash Studios
who have recently completed a new Kid Robot store in Miami I was really impressed, I think these guys are great! They are producing some really strong work and I think it's only a matter of time before they will be the darlings of the overpriced design magazines. Make sure you keep an eye out for these guys!

AND SO IT BEGINS...

This is the very first post - expect many more. The blog will be a channel for me to post things that I wish to share with you; whether that be music, art, fashion, design and anything else that is stimulating. Something for everyone I hope.

So here goes...

Dutch designers
Freedom of Creation (FOC) have been commissioned by Onitsuka Tiger (of Kill Bill fame) to create a giant illuminated shoe containing a miniature city. The shoe bears a strong resemblance to the Ahibara district in Tokyo which is more commonly known as Electric City.

Electric City, Tokyo

The shoe is one of the coolest pieces of design I have seen in a long time. There is no doubt that we will be seeing much more of FOC in the future.

I hope you enjoyed the first post, I decided to keep it short and sweet.

Check back tomorrow for the latest.
