“Well Read” is a series of staged portraits of fictional characters, be it from a novel, a poem or a children’s story.

The process begins when Julieta invites each model to choose a book and a character that is significant to them. After reading the book (both the model and Julieta), agree on a costume, location, props and feel for the photograph, resulting in a collaborative performance: each model brings their personal story and Julieta interprets her own, multiplying the possibilities of reading beyond the fiction evoked by the photograph.

PUT YOUR BACK INTO IT

Julieta Sans explores the performative potential and very peculiar gestures that people adopt (or not) when they are told that they have complete freedom to pose in any way they want without facing the camera and the photographer.

Julieta is now working on the second part of the project where she will be photographing men and try to find out if one gender is more expressive or self conscious than the other.
