CASA STUDY

The restoration of Casa Orlandi was handled by Sabrine Bignami of B-Arch studio. The house has certainly caught our eye and shows how to restore a building steeped in history and bring it firmly into the present whilst respecting its original grandeur.

Casa Orlandi is a private residence which can be found in Florence, it was built in the sixteenth century.

[T]HATS THE WAY I LIKE IT

It's safe to say joes[a]fiend has a hat fetish, mainly for Supreme's five panel hats. We just checked out the Autumn/Winter 08 season preview and it's one of the strongest collections the New York City based streetwear vanguard have dropped in a long time. Expect to see us rocking at least one of each style [not all at the same time though].

SWINGING IN LONDON

71% of adults used to play on the streets when they were young. 21% of children do so now. Are we designing children and play out of the public realm?

This project is a study into different ways of bringing play back into public space. It focuses on ways of incorporating incidental play in the public realm by not so much as having separate play equipment that dictates the users but by using existing furniture and architectural elements that indicate playful behaviour for all.

It asks us to question the current framework for public space and whether it is sufficient while also giving permission for young people to play in public.

Play as you go…” Bruno Taylor.

A PEEK INTO THE LIFE OF SIR PAUL SMITH

Have you ever wondered what treats Sir Paul Smith has in his office and what his loyal fans send him? Well, wonder no longer, Sir Paul has started a blog dedicated to all the weird, wonderful and intriguing objects he encounters.

They range from this chair which came not clad in bubble wrap, but instead was covered in stamps, to a watercolour painting of his Westbourne House shop by Manolo Blahnik in celebration of its 10th Anniversary in May this year. Check out his blog for a heavy dose of inspiration:

BELGIAN BANGERS

We’ve still not seen the documentary ‘Part of the Weekend Never Dies’ but have been meaning to for some time and this Friday [29.08.08], London’s best record store, Pure Groove, answers our prayers with an in-store screening to promote the release of this Soulwax treat on DVD.

To further our excitement, if you purchase the film from the Smithfield based shop you get a rather pleasing free screenprint poster of the artwork [pictured] in silver – tres beau! Check out Pure Groove’s nifty little website too – we love the free downloads. Also worth a look is Soulwax’s site for the doc – a great taster of what lies in wait next Friday…

JOES[A]FIEND X NIKE ID

joes[a]fiend got a call from the Design Consultants at Nike iD London about the new Olympic materials pack which has just dropped, we were asked to pop into the London studio to make a pair of trainers and t-shirt. With an opportunity like this we couldn’t say no!

We played it safe and went for a pair of high-top Dunk’s in the joes[a]fiend corporate colours – red, white and black, although the new Olympic gold material turned us into magpies! We are expecting delivery within the month, when we get them you'll be first to see them.

DERAILED DELIGHT IN DEPTFORD

The Deptford Project café is one of the most exciting things to come out of my home county of Essex since These New Puritans. The project has taken a disused railway carriage, originating from the nightmare that is the South East Essex line and innovatively restored and converted it into a colourful, breezy café/bistro/art space, with a weekend creative industries market that will host a collection of art, design, music and film.

The creative eyes behind the restoration project are Studio Myerscough, who, along with Luke Morgan, are responsible for the gleeful use of retro song lyrics and the fantastic display of fonts which adorn the main body of the renovated carriages hand painted façade. Cute touches such as hand stencilled chairs, an Elvis dedicated bathroom and bright garden umbrellas make the space a truly unique way to spend a summer afternoon. The project also has its roots firmly placed in providing locally sourced produce and sustainably farmed coffees to ethically minded punters. Better still, it promises to hold occasional BBQs; the first of which is this bank holiday Monday, surely the best way to unwind from carnival madness.

The Deptford Project café is the first step in an exciting regeneration project which aims to bring the area around the [soon to be rebuilt] Deptford Train Station back to its former glory. Just one more reason to venture south of the river...

The café is situated at: 121 - 123 Deptford High Street

SERIOUS FUN

joes[a]fiend enjoyed a night at the flicks this week and were completely won over by Edo Bertoglio’s documentary on his old stomping ground and its denizens. The name of the film is Face Addict and it interweaves Bertoglio’s photographic portraits of this unique period in New York’s history alongside recent interviews [many darkly hilarious, some heart-warming] with his pals from back in the day.

Along the way we come across Debbie Harry, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. However, the real story here lies with Glenn O’Brien who lends the film a sobering [yet overall uplifting] narrative that would otherwise have been absent. His parents make a star turn too; keep an eye out for his mum’s Christmas jumper, a real corker.

Face Addict is showing at the ICA from today to Sunday 7th September. Be sure to check out the great magazine selection in the gift shop too, not to be missed.

MARMALADE - ISSUE 8 [YOUR LAST CHANCE]

"No longer in existence, Marmalade magazine was chiefly about mapping new trends and ideas, in form and content [conventional quark grids weren't used, every page was a photograph of a collage], as well as showcasing the cream of existing and new creative talent." YCN.

You can get your hands on issue 8 of the defunct magazine for the bargain basement price of £5 from the nice guys at YCN.

NIKE SPORTSWEAR PRESENTS… 1948

Besides the spectacular opening ceremony for the Olympics on the 8th August, another spectacular launch was happening in another corner of Beijing that day. The new Nike Sportswear line was previewed; featuring items such as the hi-top patent dunks in block colourways [reminiscent of the Also Known As x Nike iD 'wet paint' pack], and has since been launched across the globe in several new pop-up retail spaces dedicated to the collection.

joes[a]fiend check out the launch of the London chapter last Thursday, and was impressed by the temporary store located on Bateman’s Row in Shoreditch. The space is not just home to some fly kicks, but also graffiti artist Mode2’s twenty foot tall interpretation of some of Nike’s greatest Olympians.

The Nike design team have outdone themselves on the space - one half is a futuristic black and neon installation, and the other a mock gymnasium. Pull yourself away from watching the Olympics on TV and get yourself down there.

WEEKEND WARM-UP #2

Eric Prydz vs Donna Giles “And I’m Telling Pjanoo”

I have to be honest, I never thought I’d be as addicted to an Eric Prydz record as I have been this week.

I’m sure the majority of us have heard the big ol' stabby Electro-House monster "Pjanoo" in it’s original instrumental form. Especially as there has been a number of remixes from the likes of Fred Falke, High Contrast and Patrick L since the beginning of the year, but mixing in Donna Giles screaming vocals of 1994s “and I’m telling you I’m not going” is a work of genius.

Currently available on 12” white label, though not online. I got my copy from Funky Monkey.

Good Luck/Get Hype!
