10 IDEAS THAT ARE CHANGING THE WORLD

Here at joes[a]fiend we like to ensure our people know what’s going on, so here are 10 things that will be affecting they way we live for the next 30 years…

1 COMMON WEALTH
National interests aren’t what they used to be. Our survival requires global solutions.

2 THE END OF CUSTOMER SERVICE
With self-serve technology, you’ll never need to see a cashier again.

3 THE POST-MOVIE-STAR ERA
Get ready for more films in which the leading man is not “he” but “who”?

4 REVERSE RADICALISM
Want to stop terrorism? Start talking to terrorists who stop themselves.

5 KITCHEN CHEMISTRY
Why the squishy art of cooking is giving way to cold, hard science.

6 GEOENGINEERING
Messing with nature has caused global warming. Messing with it more might fix it.

7 AGEING GRACEFULLY
Forget conventional wisdom; grey-haired societies aren’t a problem.

8 CURING THE 'DUTCH DISEASE'
How resource-rich nations can unravel the paradox of plenty.

9 WOMEN’S WORK
Tapping the female entrepreneur spirit can pay big dividends.

10 BEYOND THE OLYMPICS
Coming: constant TV coverage of global sporting events.

MAKING AN EXHIBITION OF THEMSELVES

joes[a]fiend was strolling past Liberty the other day and witnessed a few tourists snapping away with their cameras at the window displays. These arresting ensembles by Michael Wolf pay tribute to the factory workers in China who produce the majority of the worlds cheap toys.

The windows promote the V&A’s China Design Now show (running until 13th July 2008) and are a Far East for the eyes.

NEON NEON

“A new group from Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals and Boom Bip. Their debut album Stainless Style (OUT NOW WORLDWIDE) is themed around the life of John Delorean and features Spank Rock, Yo Majesty and Fat Lip.”
Neon Neon, MySpace.

Those of us who grew up watching Marty McFly driving the Delorean or cruising on his hoverboard will no doubt enjoy this Electro Pop album.

When we first came across the album there was an instant feeling “Oh here we go again, another attempt to jump on a dying trend”. This album ticks every box, its melodic electro riffs draws you into to an 80’s induced head bopping daze. With appearances on the album by Yo Majesty and Fat Lip give Neon Neon an edge over the homogenous Electro-by-numbers being produced.

Hot Chip beware: this could take your crown of album of 2008 so far. Head over to the Neon Neon MySpace to give the tracks a listen. Our pick is ‘I Told Her On Alderaan’, or maybe ‘Dream Cars’; they’re both contagious. Oh, hold on, it could be ‘Raquel’…

MORE TRENDY WALLPAPER?

Another regular release to-keep-you-coming-back-for-more kinda thing here.

However, the wonderful thing about this great idea is that it's free. L.A based designer Bobby S. is unleashing a new wallpaper for many a screen size (from monitors to iPhones and PSPs) every Wednesday(!) until his stock from his favourite designers runs out. Rumour has it that it's over a years' worth of desktop delights in total. Give your screen a treat at http://kitsunenoir.com/blog/dwp/

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

A few weeks ago joes[a]FIEND was at the Vivienne Westwood after party, which was good fun.

Whilst clearing out our pockets we found the invite, it’s an interesting little flyer, take a look and tell us what you think…

CINEMATIC IN THE ATTIC

The greatest ideas tend to be, at their core, the most simple. Why hasn’t someone thought of the Secret Cinema before then?

Every month Fabien Riggall selects a fitting location to show a film that is pretty certain not to be screened at your local Odeon. Future screenings are likely to be a mixture of cult-classics and previews. For the first event the audience were treated to a preview of Gus Van Sant’s ‘Paranoid Park’ amidst a suitable array of skate performance in a London yard.

See www.secretcinema.org for further details.

RED AND YELLOW AND PINK AND BLUE…

Flipbooks were something we all grew up with; a release from the monotony of the school day.

Masashi Kawamura a Japanese art director and copywriter has raised the bar by Creating the “Rainbow In Your Hand” flipbook. When the book is flipped from beginning to end it creates a 3D rainbow in your hands.

Rainbow In Your Hand is available from the Japanese Utrecht website.

ARKITIP X WOOD WOOD X NIKE

Arkitip No. 0044 HIGHMATH

“Arkitip is a hand numbered 4/color art book. The fact that the magazine publishes site specific work at a lower price point than what hangs on gallery walls makes it available to art collectors of all economic levels. Each issue is like an original piece of art.” Arkitip

For the first time ever Arkitip have outsourced the design responsibilities for the latest edition of their fantastic magazine. Who apart from Wood Wood (the Danish design trio) could step-up to this challenge?

Issue 0044 includes:
Work from the likes of Andrew Schoultz, Jo Jackson, José Parlá, Kaws and Michael Perry to name just a few.

Our favourite part of issue 0044 is the 3D viewfinder and 3 reels, which contains artwork from the magazine.

Issue 0044 is hand packaged and numbered limited edition of 1500.

IFYOUCOULD.CO.UK

ifyoucould.co.uk have released their third set of prints from established designers/illustrators and they are quite something. Each month Will Hudson and Alex Bec select two talented visual artists to create a B2 sized print on the subject 'If you could do anything tomorrow what would it be?' This month it appears that Anthony Burrill wants to make pleasing Bad Art before heading off to the horizon whilst Siggi Eggertsson would like to turn himself into an Alsatian made out of triangles. The prints are available until the last day of March... We await April's installment with excitement.PFH Thompson
